What the heck is citation management? That sounds pretty confusing but it’s really not. A citation is any mention of your business online using your business name, address and/or phone number.
If you want to be a successful business these days, you have to have a presence online. 81% of people search online to learn about a product or service before heading down to the physical business location to purchase it. If you want people to find your business online, you need to have information all over the Internet in different places to increase the chances of someone seeing your business. For example, you would want your business information listed on Google Maps, Yelp, Facebook and so on. So how can this be done? The answer is citation management.

I tackle this beast in two ways. This is the only real way to do it correctly. First I submit your business information to four of the major data aggregators that feed local business data to Google, Yahoo, Bing, Yelp, Foursquare, Facebook, Yellowpages, Superpages, Angie’s List and about 200 other local business directories online. This is how you can get your business listings generated quickly, across the Internet. The limitation with this is that usually each listing that is generated on each local directory won’t be optimized. The local business directories pretty much take only the basic info like your business name, address and phone number.
Second, I go find the most important local business listings like Google, Yelp and Facebook and add more information about your business including hours of operation, payments accepted, photos, your website address, business categories and more. I put in as much info about your business as I can!
If you have been in business for a while and have already built many citations it is a great idea to do a citation audit, especially if you have changed business names, addresses, phone number or website addresses. Citation Audits can be a pain but we are very skilled at doing them. I document all citations that you have and also collect name, address, phone and website variations that we discover. Then I do another in-depth search of listings with incorrect information as well. Afterwards, I can perform Citation Cleanup if you’d like.
If your citations do not contain consistent business information then they need to be cleaned up and corrected. This is very time consuming but it needs to be done!
