On-page SEO

How should I set up my website’s navigation?

Make it so that people can get to every page with just two or three clicks from the home page. Four clicks would be the absolute most! You want to make sure to set up a main navigation menu at the top of your website. Some people include links at the bottom of their website or have side bars with links as well.

If people can’t find or get to all the pages on your site, that is a bad thing. Also, they should be able to get to any page on your website in the least amount of clicks possible.

What is site navigation?

Site navigation allows for people to look through all the pages on your website with ease. For example, at the top of a website you will see links like “home”, “about us”, ‘contact us” and so on. Also, you will see links in different areas that you can click on to visit other pages on the website.

How should I set up my URL structure?

One thing you need to make sure of is to keep your URLs as short as possible. They should not be longer than 70 characters in length. You also want to make sure that your URLs don’t have too many sub folders. For example, www.domain.com/locations/tampa. “Locations” is a sub folder, so is “Tampa”. So you never want a URL to look like this: www.domain.com/subfolder1/subfolder2/subfolder3/subfolder4/subfolder5/subfolder6/. The most sub folders you would want to use would be two or three if possible. Also, each sub folder should be named well.

Why should I care about my URL structure?

On your website each page has it’s own unique URL. This helps people to be able to visit each page by typing it in or searching for it. Search engines also use your URL structure to decide which pages are more important and which ones they will rank higher in the search engines.

How do I set up internal link anchor text?

When you add a link from one page to another, the html will look something like this, “Find out more about our Tampa location!”. Note, this is still ok to do for internal links only. If someone else links to your website, never tell them what anchor text to use. Let them decide naturally what do use as anchor text.

Why is internal link anchor text important?

Search engines read the anchor text to your links to find out what your pages are about. For example, if you linked from your home page to your page about brownie recipes using anchor text that says “see our amazing brownie recipes”, this would help tell Google that your brownie page is about amazing brownie recipes.
